New exclusive tape rips uploaded to PA website.

I've just finished converting over 200 of my personal pirate radio tape recordings and I have uploaded 34 new ones to the pirate archive website last night. There is a mixture of Yorkshire stations with Dream FM, ABC FM, Rapid, SCR and more. All are from my original 1980s or 90s cassette tape collection that I recorded back in the day. The majority of them are really clean and brand new Sony or TDK cassettes were used at the time of recording on a Pioneer separate tape deck from an Akai analogue tuner that I had at the time with a signal meter to get the best signal I could from the half wave dipole on a 50ft scaffolding pole in the back garden with my CB aerial on it. You'll hear that I got reception of the stations in Sheffield and Doncaster crystal clear at home in North Leeds which is one of the highest places in Leeds too, I could see Emley Moor and Holme Moss masts out of my bedroom windows.

I've got loads more to sort out so expect more from Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford and so on.

Thanks for that Lee, I wonder when they would come availble, i’ve been spending all my time working on a stereo encoder to send all these things through. When I went to Leeds years ago, very short period spent there I couldn’t cope with it, going up this building you could see the top of the emley moor mast over a hill, it was interesting. In the city centre was good line of sight down towards the east down megawatt valley. Memories of going there with my dad too, peoples would suddenly come in clear when you got over the hill, it was strong round the corner from were he worked, must of been near by. There was another pirate called vibe would only come out of one channel, just had a guys voice saying vibe, it would quickly go when you left the city, don't know what it was.

I wish i’d saved all my old tapes, probalbly more of use to me, as I would often try to get the song I liked, would of been a tape with mostly the same songs on it, would often be flicking between mono and stereo, half hour recording with something barely there in the back round. At least then there were things to hear, apart from your own, I can go weeks without listening to fm, the most interesting thing I heard, I though I was hearing a pirate turned out to ury’s transmitter coming on air,…I though with it playing were love lies it could be a pirate, but then the do ron ron song. Its shame that lsr didn’t get lpfm, it was always doing rsl’s, know dream had to move around for it, the stereo sounded more like a mono on lsr.

Or8 northeast... Sheffield had a pirate that only came through one speaker too! Mighty FM's stereo box went to one channel, then went off.. Another station popped up with stereo and only one channel working and vibe seems to be the only name i could think of and then you said that about vibe today...
Since the last brainstorming i had I've learnt that,or remembered that Fresh FM of Sheffield started out on 99.5 , yep, before 1fm was put there..And Dance FM started in 95 which i thought started later.. It's that long ago it's getting very difficult to remember owt.. it's like 30 odd years ago innit..

It was on 106.8 1996, guess they could of taken down to sheffield whatever it was, I couldn’t hear it for long on the uncomfortable train journey going out of the city.

I think it was around 95, I was finally able to get a replacement for the hifi had been taken away, the guy took it down to eggbrough some were, may of been later in 94, in 95 I think fantasy may of still be on then, at least the early part, I had the hifi through 95/96, hearing fantasy on its last frequency of 105.9, low nice sounding audio, hear crackles over it, it went off dance came along, joy came on a simliar frequency. I don’t know if it was joy or fantasy i have a memory of it playing are you man enough constanly by un clio, maybe been centred on one speaker more than the other. Great songs, what radio was all about, great memories too


i’ve just got memories of hearing dance on 107.5, listening in my parents room I didn’t have a room of my own. Remember this song ‘do you really wanta love’ mixing in with dj dado x-files, nylon moon sky plus came on.. It might of been 96 when I was listening as children by robert miles wasn’t released until then, remember hearing the original version of 7 colors, or something simliar to it, martin leverton saying ‘live shows follow shortly’ hearing the constant beat, the stereo you’d get from a tape, difference between mono and stereo that I liked. It did have a constant beat like fantasy, was always there when I wanted to tune to it.

I managed to get all my old cd’s from then dance zones, carl cox fact, I must be a ghoul for this era

Do you know the name of the song I think it was heard on a sheffield station, I have on on a recording of another station, but don’t know the name it said ‘give me some more, give me some more together’ ‘you and me together’ the melody was simliar what was on the south bank show, it has to be my all time favourites one.

I hear the uno clio song coming over this recording too

Just seen 2 SCR recordings on pa and they sound really good mate The reception you got sounds crystal clear.. Assuming they are yours! I do wish i recorded more back then but ne'er mind it is what it is..
Can't wait to hear the other 30 odd now

They have updated their website again and added a few more recordings I sent them. Inner City Radio Leeds a short lived station I did in 1990 are now in the Yorkshire section and a few new ones from the Sheffield stalwarts Mighty FM, Fantasy and SCR plus Emergency FM, PCR and Veronica in Bradford finally Rapid Radio & NRG in Leeds.

I'll be sending them another batch of cassette rips at the weekend.

listened to freedom fm, joy fm leeds lot of these stations i’ve never heard of, I appreciate good quality too, mono’s not so bad as long as its not too muffled got treble in it/recordings were the treble keeps coming and going can be annoying, can sound ruff through a stereo transmitter.

i’m surprised theres not a way to remove wow and flutter, I suppose making something mono stereo would be hard though, maybe ai could help, get the songs it could recognise, maybe get some kind fliters to get voice talking dj from the original recording, mix the two together, you've got an upscaled recording They can colorise old wartime footage now and upsale it, make wartime speeches stereo, sooner or later people with restorted radios likely have to move their lpower am to fm, wonder what would happen if you put re generate fantasy fm sheffield or something into an ai, guess it would sound awfully strange.
