The launch of Kiss 105
I was thinking of listening to this again it doesn’t seem available anywhere, does anyone know were it might be available?, Grace launched it, something I listened to a while ago, with people talking about vibe it has made me want to listen again. The test transmissions were interesting the announcements about frequencies, said in Sheffield, Bradford on 105.6, Leeds and York on 105.1, so they tune to the Emley transmitter in York! quite far away, it just seemed to play alot of r n b through the day, quite boring, I did have the kiss in ibiza compilations 95/96 which had lot more dance on it.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
Bam Bam launched the station Feb 14th 1997. I use to live in Nottingham back then and could hear the test transmissions on 105.8
Then Radio 106 started test transmission from Copt oak and interfered with the signal. Always remember Cold rock a party by MC Lyte was always playing on the tests.
Now i live in Yorkshire, but i feel i moved Twenty years too late.
I f you search Galaxy/kiss 105 on mixcloud theres recordings of kiss 105 the weekend just before it flipped to Galaxy 105

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
bam bam and jojo do ring a bell, I heard bam bam mentioned on some other forum started making me think of this, maybe he has started his own station. There was the opposite problem here when kiss came on 106.4, it made a right mess of the other frequencies, I did hear some of the songs, Byron Stingily - get up everybody, another song seemed say positivitly hostile, ooh yeah don't know what it was!
I’ve been trying to find a song for ages that was on one of the test transmissions, it was also played on dream fm, had a pan flute spanish lyrics?, like new atlantic but not the same. Its quite interesting dream went off air to get a licence, you had a song which I suppose was abit obscure playing on Kiss 105 bit of coincidence, there was also a woman talking on the launch about how much Leeds needed a dance station, someone saying something simliar in the documentery about it. I couldn’t find who the other bidders were, to be honest I can’t see how they would of got a chance of getting licence if was the regional one, licences always go to who has the most money. The owners of kiss 105 had been successful at setting up kiss 102, had a team in place everything ready to go, some of the adverts were similar to a pirate.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
I think this is one of the tracks your referring to, can't think what the pan flute tune would be. Bam Bam & Jo Jo at breakfast, Jo Jo as been there from day one. I think Bam Bam is behind the online radio station called Halo Radio, its also on one of the SSDAB mux's up in the North East. Sounds good, remind me of how Kiss in London use to sound, fast paced and hot when Bam Bam move there!
I do remember years ago finding a list of the other bidders for the first regional Yorkshire license online. The successful bid went under the name Faze 2 and licensed the Kiss name from Emap. I guess the other radio groups around at the time bidding would be Capital radio group, Saga, Century and Lincs to mention a few.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
Wow! thanks so much i’ve been looking for that for ages, it just stuck in my head, it would play alot when I was tuned off frequency, trying to listen to another radio station, it was played on it too. I guess i’ll never find out what the other song is, the pan flute was very simliar to that in the song by New Atlantic - I know, lower in key went on through out the song, not many lyrics kind of foreign like Agnelli & Nelson - EI Nino not as many, sounded like esal bona setes woman saying arriba, could be wrong.
I listened to other one, like the 2nd song the most, couldn't find any other recordings of the tests

Kiss 106.4 (Anglia) used to reach all the way out to Andover in Hampshire (and beyond!)
....Back around 2000/2001 I had a station on around there and it would always come through when we were off.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
unforunately its not the one, I was searching yeserday and came across that one, it was more like Jam & Spoon’s ride in the night in tone, down in octaves. I’ve tried searching for ‘songs on kiss 105 test transmissions’ didn’t bring anything up, also ‘songs played on dream fm leeds’ searched many reddit’s for 90’s pan flute dance song it still dosen’t come up.
This is the song I liked the most sampled diana ross cold rock a party,
it did bring excitement when it said new radio station for yorkshire and the east coast. Songs in the launch did seem abit more down beat than the test, the style of music in that was not something I was overly keen on, hand in hand by grace was about the best on the launch.
don’t hear this anymore, used to get them sometimes on dance zone cd’s Candy Girls - Wham Bam
Grace - hand in hand, they also played the hardfloor version of blue monday, there was another song by grace sounded more downbeat, seemed to go on for a long time, I wasn’t that sure of it, maybe they had to play it with her been at the launch, then something that sounded abit drum and bass.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
The transmitter came in here last year during tropo with rds, the bilsdale transmitter had been off air for over a year due a fire it meant the frequency had been clear, simliar to what it was in the 90s. Where I used to live sometimes you would get vibe over the top of bilsdale during tropo, would just be a mixture, on the east coast under tropo you could hear all the transmitters with the frequencies been clear, even 107.7.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
I'm not sure I've got the launch of kiss on tape but do have a kiss tape from around that time, maybe recorded on the lead up to going live..I lived up at Norfolk park in sunny sheff back then and had all the radio i could ever want to listen to with all the pirates coming from there at the time so kiss only got a look in for a day or two if the DTI had been about smashing up aerials and taking boxes.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
I loved the Sheffield pirates, I do remember in 99 Cool fm, Big fm, used to share a transmitter, I had test transmission of Big fm on tape, got recorded over, wish i’d saved alot of the eariler radio stations too, i’ve listened to lot of other peoples old recordings there is alot missing, the none live tapes, more from the earlier rave era, there did seem to be simliar stations across the country makes it seem less unique. I do still have some short 20-25minutes long of the big fm, would sit by my radio listening to both.
I really enjoyed the reflex records chart show on cool even thought it was only around for a few weeks, Martin Leverton had a really designative voice, I do remember him from the earliest days of picking up pirates hissy reception, maybe on an advert, what he did on dance fm was really professional, seemed to be able to make stations sound almost like they were licenced. Dj dream was also really good on Fantasy fm, very undersated would talk now again to say what song was on, the personailties I miss.
I do remember some of the songs on cool fm, mount rushmore - you better, phatt’s & small’s, chain of fools, shanks & bigfoot, phatt’s & small’s and shanks & bigfoot have had lot of airplay on licenced stations since has jadded them abit, heart dance all the time. There was a song that played on cool i’ve been looking for ages, it went why must we make love on the piste, or something, female vocals, thought it was to do with sking.

Probably just a vanity project. Running a radio station online and broadcasting on these SSDAB mux must cost a few grand a year.radionortheast wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 8:47 am Bam Bam’s Halo radio has gone off air, was going try this sometime, don’t know why it has gone.
What with paying for PRS/PPL plus monthly fees for the SSDAB. I didnt hear any adverts going out on Halo, so if theres no revenue from no advertising, its not viable.

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
There was fun kids on dab, it had no adverts or news, i’m pretty sure a while ago they were trying to make it so all stations had to have news, I hate the idea of. It had to come off some of the networks, don’t know how it was run, the operator came on another forum surprised about, obviously he’d been squeezed off some of them,
I guess they must upped the rates, I can still hear on the lincs dab has good enough reception, how its been paid for I don’t know, its great that it keeps on going without adverts and news.
With ssdab I think the rates do vary as to which their on, if their run by a community station their usually lower, I think if their out sourced to another company or the place has bigger coverage area I suppose their put up, would likely cost 1,000’s a year, some of the figures i've seen quoted around.
I suppose bam bam could stream through a 3rd party website

I only remember hearing JJ and Nev Ryder, there was a recording on mixcloud a while ago, seems harder to search for things through it. I think it later became renagade something I never heard on fm, it does seem to be around uploading recordings to youtube.

Hi.. That big FM isn't the Sheffield one AFAIK.. Northeast, yeah i remember big FM..Was freedom fm before and freedom was run by Craig Benson of freedom in west mids. The big fm and freedom were run direct from my block 12th floor i think. Big FM was run by Jake Jay and had dj crazy k (a lady) and a few more and yes i remember Nev Ryder who was only about 16-17 with the niche tunes.. Good times!

Re: The launch of Kiss 105
I do remember a station around 107.95/108 called Freedom, asking for dj’s don’t know anymore what happened to it, I was listening to Dance fm at the time, Joy fm, the guy on that would always go on about how he’d met commander riker, think he was a milkman. I remember reading about a station called freedom, either derby or brimingham don’t know, ended up been depressing story, i’ve always wondered, always used to be a film on tv called freedom radio did make me think of it..
I remember hearing a station Big fm on 107.7, on my pocket radio at Cudworth, tuning off the frequency I could hear it, I got no further thought, it was just a blank carrier at the time, I got my own 1w out there near some electricity pylons. I struggled to get Big clear back at home, often got bits of static over the top of it, my dads lawn mower would hiss over the top of it. I do remember the test transmission, someone JJ sounded like they were talking into pair headphones, they had all types of music even some opera, seemed to ajusting the signal live on air mentioned someone getting the signal 5/10 minutes ago badly, then it was clear, funny that it came from you house or block.
