More and more I notice both Project 106.5 and Rinse 106.8 silent, and today, they both are.

What is going on?

A complete waste of spectrum!

Rinse are often going silent for hours. They need to get their act together if they want to keep the licence

Even some pirates use Silence Detectors these days, so no excuses.

....There is a CR station down in Brighton on 101.4 which regularly goes silent, sometimes for days on end!

Problems with payments again? Slightly remember it was something like that last time they were silent for a while, too. Maybe someone else can remember properly.

Noticed on the ofcom website that their licence expires in February. Maybe they've given up on the FM

I think it was just a 10 year licence probably issued every 5 or 10 years sort of thing and probably just get another extended one on 6th Feb.

I always thought legal stations weren't allowed to be on silent. Anyway, you cant beat rude fm 88.2 for silence. 2 years.

HCR 92.3 near me often goes silent for hours at a time. Plus, a few months back after the George Floyd killing in the USA Rinse along with some other media outlets (including Point Blank) went silent for the day in protest and never had any repercussions.

Sorry to go off-topic but as you are around near Runcorn/Warrington area I was just wondering if you pick up that Base FM on 87.7 from Manny?

I don't get it at my home (I'm further into the Wirral) but I have heard it weakly as far as Lymm village, but my car reception is a bit crap so it probably goes a bit further than that. It's only really listenable with good signal once you're in Manchester's council areas proper.

If any RSL's suddenly pop up they'll probably not even realise until they get taken off, which will probably happen soon if they don't find a better dial.

I thought that when they popped up on the frequency, not the best choice if you want to try and avoid getting taken off. The FM dial in the North West is really congested (according to Ofcom), even Radio Warrington had to go on AM because of it, but there's a good few slots above 100Mhz they could comfortably sit in and not interfere with anything. Practically every dial in London is used and I can listen to any station (legal or not) as long as the next station is 200khz I don't hear any interference.

Which makes me wonder about all these rigs on silent, what's the point?
To try and lay claim to a frequency?
Pah! If you're not putting out anything, move on so others can use it

Isn’t it that these stations that go silent are using link systems, and whilst they can turn off the studio desk, they can’t remotely turn off their TX? As they don’t know how to add that capability to the link system.

^^ Lee's right, it's probably that the DJ's shift finished and they forgot to turn AutoDJ on (or it broke). While it's a total waste of spectrum stations down in London can't really afford to turn their rig off for long as someone else will inevitably jump on it.
