RDS

Post by OldskoolPirate » Tue Aug 13, 2019 1:50 pm

Is it possible to create RDS without a 192khz soundcard ? Is it even possible?

Can I somehow trick it into creating the signal?

I don’t want to use rds encoders really, I prefer to net link but RDS is always an issue. Do I have any other option ?

You can generate fixed RDS using a PIC, a 4332kHz crystal, a handful of capacitors, resistors and a couple of inductors. Total cost ~£2. They're trivially easy to build and their cost is negligible

Yeah just use RDS module PCB (avaiable on eBay for about 10 to 20 quid) or just build one like Albert says...

Some of the cheap RDS encoders use RS232.
So when you buy one you may need to get yourself an adaptor to convert USB to rs232 if your computer doesn't have a serial/RS232 port. They are usually a simple cable with usb connector at one end and 9-way D-Type at the other.

RDS using a audio DAC is not possible unless your sample rate is atleast 2x the nyquist of the RDS subcarrier which is 2x 57KHz = 114KHz sample rate at a bare minimum, and even then there will still be issues, ideally the RDS would be 80% of the nyquist at s minimum to not avoid any issues caused by the LPF and resconstruction filter of the DAC.

most modern desktop / laptops are nowadays 192 on board chips like ALC
