Why not use something software based for much less money?

Yes I do, there's a small few London stations that I know of that use them and thankfully they don't sound like Heart.

Force used to use a hardware processor. I've seen it in person actually, it was a custom unit. I never got to see what was inside but I suspect it was made from off-the-shelf PCBs arranged together to work.

Do you mean that silver coloured thing? If so I don't recognise it myself. Looks a little bit like some of BW's stuff, maybe with a rack lockout plate, but could also be a homebrew jobby - who knows!?

I agree with thewiseprankster - use a cheap PC with Breakaway. Don't risk it, keep your pristine 8100A with XT2 chassis for non-broadcast use, unless you are legal!

..and from the evidence on the dial Optimod can sound crap if you are determined to set it up wrong! IMHO Breakaway sounds better than Stereo Tool and Sonos 4 - but maybe I did not spend long enough playing with their settings. Certainly Breakaway is a good choice for people new to processing - minimal number of controls - which is a good thing if you don't understand what you are doing! (Not saying you do or don't)
