mi soul

Post by sparkypaul » Wed Jun 10, 2015 8:20 pm

Great news that mi soul has obtained a DAB licence and will start broadcasting across London from 27th June. It's about time London got a real radio station run by people who love music. Good luck mr gordon mac

Does anyone on this forum actually listen to DAB? Please send your answers on a postcard to The BBC House or answer below this post.

It is irrelevant whether people on here listen to DAB I've been listening to pirates and scanning the FM dial since the mid 1980's and to be frank I've almost gave up trying to find decent pirates nowadays. Although they are still out there. The point is things have moved on and DAB is the way to go for legal stations nowadays. Most people do have DAB at home and I'm pretty sure most households listen to radio via DAB now.

no i agree dab is dead. they need to move to dab+ whether the industry wants it or not. i myself haven't turned on a radio in general for years, my listening is online.

Maybe I'm wrong.i thought most radios sold nowadays were DAB.
What is DAB+ I've not heard of it before.

dab+ is a better version of dab that can allow better quality but at lower bitrates. it uses mp4, where as dab uses mp2 which is only good at higher bitrates.

So would it be easy to go from DAB to DAB+ as a broadcaster or would it involve applying for another licence or can you broadcast on both platforms. Confused!!!
I'm gonna have to google this.
The way things are going I reckon in the next few years FM will be not in use (by legal station anyway)

i don't think you need a new licence. apparently dab+ compatible radio ownership still isn't as common as dab only radio ownership though.

A lot of the newer receivers are DAB+ compatible or are software upgradable to DAB+. It's only the cheap shit kitchen top £20 jobs and the early adopters with their HiFi separates from the early 2000s that are holding back a switch to DAB+.

Don't believe that it would be the answer to poor quality output though. All it means is commercials being able to squeeze even more stations onto a mux and instead of 64kbps mono it becomes a crappy 32kbps stereo.

Anyway, good luck to Mi Soul. If it was me, I'd be tempted to lead the way with DAB+. Hope they can keep up the funding to stay on air longer than a year or two.
