Decent Music downloads

Post by sinus trouble » Sun Sep 01, 2019 11:15 pm

Hello Necks :)

I find it so infuriating that I want to go legal with music downloads yet I am faced with a database of either POP crap, some clip or 'Radio Edit' that they have from a compilation CD??

Most of my MP3s are ripped from my vinyls (Good old 12" mixes) I refuse to subscribe to something that has no knowledge of ALL music!

Does anyone have any advice? Discogs is the only site to list every track I have ever searched for but does not offer a download service??
I am as stupid as I look! :|

Why even bother? All of the royalties from the legal tunes you buy just go to Sony or Warner anyway, regardless of what label the tune you buy is on. Those are an absolutely hateful bunch, trying to ban everything for copyright infringement and have even had the law changed to block you from uploading anything that might be copyrighted material, which is really dangerous ground i.e. mass censorship.

I download from mix cloud downloader or use 4K Video Downloader but check the quality on the youtube tracks first. some only come out of the right speaker. :D

Thanks for the advice!

I have had a few confrontations with WMG and fair use is not in their vocabulary! They even had a representative visit the local shops in my area! Any that were playing a radio or music was threatened with a fine!

I guess I had good intentions to do the right thing! They deserve no respect!!!!

Music Copyright, Licencing, Performing Rights and all the rest is a complete racket! I remember - pre-internet - when the Performing Rights Society made sure that artistes earned money for radio plays, record sales and so on. These days, they're useless and just try to force pubs, clubs, shops and other public spaces to pay randomly "calculated" charges for the "right" to play music in public.

I've discussed this at length with plenty of musicians, and most of them would just like to have their music heard by as wide an audience as possible. It doesn't matter to them if some people hear their music "free" - if the listeners like what they hear, their enjoyment will frequently be turned into CD or download sales!
"Why is my rig humming?"
"Because it doesn't know the words!"
;)

Sorry...
No matter what system you use to transfer a YouTube into an audio file you will only end up with low quality :smoke

It may look like you have a 256K Quality Rip - However inside the 256k mp3 it's still a 128kbs

Just drop one in Spek and see for yourself

Cheers Brian, nice tool!

I use Beatport for buying music, especially dance stuff. You’ll find 12” mixes of most. For an extra quid you can have WAV or AIFF

Here are the Bit-Rate -to- Cut-Off -to- Compression Ratio Numbers for the most common Bit-Rates

Code: Select all

Bit-Rate	Cut-Off Compression Ratio
1411kbps	20kHz 1:1
320kbps 19.5kHz 1:4.4
192kbps 18kHz 1:7.3
160kbps 17kHz 1:8.8
128kbps 16kHz 1:11
96kbps 15kHz 1:14.7
64kbps 11kHz 1:22

Yes, as the old saying goes, you can't polish a turd, and it's particularly applicable to transcoding MP3!

Interesting stuff Brian! :)

I would assume that 128 15khz cutoff is adequate for music production? But It still sounds awful!!

When out DJing I find the crowd don't seem to notice the quality 160kbps and upwards? However I am never satisfied unless it is 256 atleast!

WAV is great for sound editing and production but takes up so much precious space, Even some CDJs struggle to load them up for cueing!

I think Beatport is one of my favourites! Juno Records also did MP3s for a while but seem to have stopped?

That's all well and good but I would imagine that no more than 5% of the people that use this forum can even hear 17 kHz and above.

But, sound quality is not just about being able to hear a high frequency signal.
The higher the bit rate the closer it will sound to the original recording.
With too low a bit rate, compression artifacts, sounds that were not present in the original recording may be audible in the reproduction.

I get a lot of joy from blogs, but I'd be looking for old reggae or prog rock. Thing is though when you get a good blog it'll have tons of stuff on it you like. I generally enter the track, artist or album name into a search engine with "BlogSpot" on the end - here is what I mean:

It might be worth a go - you'll know if its going to work for you in 2 minutes.

Cheers Mr Yellowbeard!

I see what you mean, Once upon a time you could add 'zip' or 'zippy' to a track search which would usually retrieve promising results!

Becoming more rare these days as uploading restrictions are narrowing the search window!

I recently tried G Drive to upload mixes for sharing with friends which initially worked? Now I find my files mysteriously vanishing?? Strange........
