When u type the url in without the .pls u get listener statistics etc. Is the event of people listening across all platforms and music formats or just the amount of people listening on shoutcast.com?

The stats are the amount of people connected to and listening to the stream via the shoutcast server. As far as i know (but i will check it out) the server won't pick up connections via other platforms.

Edit, just did a little experiment and it looks like i'm correct.

therefore this does not determin how many people are listening to the station in total? If this is the case is there a way of doing so?

It should tell you the total connected to the shoutcast stream. It should include other sources such as tunein so the server knows if it has passed the maximum number of allowable connections or not

That will be due to the amount of listener slots on the server. Some can afford to pay for higher amounts and others not so.

I wonder if those listener stats count for all platforms and streams of the station. u said above on another post that you don't think so. The station I am trying to work out the listenership of is koollondon which has 150 slots. What happens if more than 150 try and lock in?

They will get a message (which if i remember rightly is) "IC:server full" . If it's a third party website then the stream won't play.
As i said up above, the shoutcast server seems to only know when your connecting directly to it (via winamp for example) yet not from third party websites. So the server won't be able to tell me who is listening from what website. There might be web scripts availible that can be set up to monitor each website and get stats that way but i couldn't say for sure. Some stream hosts will provide web scripts so that visitors to your website can see how many are listening without having to go to the server's status page (ip:port)

If you apply the Radio Caroline Online playlist stats algorithm (patent pending) - you'll find that 150 "slots" averages out to approx. 1000000 unique listeners per hour.
