I got a new radio show and...

Just recently took up a 2-hour-per-week radio show. I have no experience with transmitters or rigs or whatever I just go in do the slot back out again. Thing is I'm using a screen-reader because I'm totally blind. The show is currently just a playlist that I create before entering the studio. I wish to be able to take requests but if I were to download them I would need to use the screen-reader. If I use the screen-reader (which talks), it will go out live because the screen-reader and music are both on the same pc. Anyone know a way I could use the screen-reader without a potential 125,000 people hearing it? For those who don't know a screen-reader is just a piece of softwear that reads out what's on the computer screen.

I would bring a 2nd pc/laptop and transfer the songs over by usb as long as you turn off the windows noises.

Hi. How about a second sound card on your PC configured to output the screen reader audio only to that card, while your play out audio remains on the first sound card..or vice versa.

Cheers.

Which screen reader are you using? A blind friend of mine uses "Jaws". He has it set up so that Jaws is only coming out of a USB plug-in sound card into a little mixer, with the desk PFL going into the other mixer input. The little mixer then feeds his headphones. This means that he can "read" track titles from the music on his computer - and other things - with no risk of Jaws being heard on air. The computer's main sound card is used for the music playback into the studio desk.

He's got the system working so well that he can read the station's "Reaction Page" and even take requests and dedications whilst live on the air. He wanted to be able to do the programme on his own, without assistance. He's certainly achieved that!

Yes - exactly that. He bought a cheap USB soundcard on Ebay, and set "Jaws" to use just the USB soundcard. Then, a little mixer and headphone amplifier and he was good to go. He plays most of his show from the laptop.

He's also got another set up, using Linux and a different screenreader. He says that this is much better than the Windows job with Jaws. I'll find out about it and let you know.

He works in "legal" radio!

The little sub-mixer is used for two purposes - it mixes the PFL from the main mixer with the soundcard output of Jaws. The mixer also has a headphone amplifier that I added, so that there's plenty of level for Jaws, the PFL from the main mixer and an output monitor when not using the PFL

I asked the guy who owns the pirate about applying a soundcard but he says the whole of the laptop's output supposedly has to be on the one channel (?) and the headphones are plugged into the machine so either way apparently it would transmit. Thank god the station isn'tonline it's not like jaws hasn't spoken in the middle of a song once or twice
