Try opening it up and forcing the dial back. I've done this in the past and its worked. Failing that you will need to get one that does the full band.

ok confession time: I am blind in both eyes (yeah, really!) and have been told by a family member that the radio I use may start on 87.5 but not sure, as it's a dial. Is there a way of checking what freq a dial radio is on?

You could get an mp3 transmitter, put it on 87.5 and see if the radio picks it up.

don't know much about transmitters and that: I'm sort of stuck because the receiver I've got is pretty good and that so I don't want to have to get a new one unless I know if the thing picks up 87.5.

Can you find out which model you've got so that we can offer better advice?

There are ways to test what frequency your radio can tune to but it gets a bit long in the tooth. It will be a lot easier to buy a new one.

Is your Sony tuner one that you plug into a HiFi or other method of amplification, or is it an all-in-one unit with a speaker built in?

If it is the latter, I would recommend a Tecsun such as the PL-310 or PL-606, both of which have numerical entry (much like a calculator) and only cost around £30.
They don't have a "pip" on the number 5 to help you out but once you remember which way the numbers go (i.e. like a calculator with 1 in the bottom left or like a phone with 1 in the top left) then you will get along with it fine I'm sure.

The Tecsuns are very, very good tuners, and not just for the money, they are good full stop.

yeah have just emailed sony the model can't remember now but if it doesn't receive 87.5 I will consider a texon. mine is yes a all in one, and which texon, 310 or 606 or does it make a difference? are these fm/am or just fm just out of curiosity?

Can't you post the model here?

Both the 310 and 606 will receive AM and FM. I think you would be best suited with a 310 as the 606 requires a bit more visual feedback than the 310.

606 doesn't have the direct entry feature but you soon get used to not having it.

The 606 doesn't have direct entry. That's why I think you would need visual feedback if you got the 606, so I suggest getting the 310.

The manual says your radio only goes down to 87.6. It's a bit different to what I was expecting - the Tecsuns I have suggested are a lot smaller than your radio.

also what makes them better than other texon models I have seen multiple just interested to know the difference between them. Finally, is there any that are just as good but more geared towards the size I have?

If you want a very decent radio with outstanding FM reception go for the Sony XDR-S10HDIP, it's basically a Sony XDR-F1HD under the bonnet in the disguise of an iPod dock. They were only made for the US market but well worth it. They're the best you can get!

do you mean this radio is an imitation of another model which has the same reception, just in a docking station? and does this hold the full band (87.5-108.0?)
