Irie FM 105.8 Manchester

Post by shuffy » Sun Dec 14, 2014 5:32 pm

Anyone know what's happened to these lately? Haven't been on for a couple of weeks now. Guessing they've been taken off. That means NO pirates in Manchester on at the moment. It does however mean City Talk are a little easier to make out... :|

I could never even hear these when they were in action, and I only like in Stockport just a few miles away from the city.

Do you know where exactly where they were based?

And yes, the dial is completely dead of any pirates now - a sad sign of the times.

Where's that? As in Mosside, Whalley Range, Fallowfield sort of area?

Very poxy signal, low site, and 100 KHz away from a large NW Station whose sidebands would obliterate it further than a few miles away. If you're anywhere in Stockport with a clear line of sight into Manchester you should have been able to get it though, I had no problem in Oldham.

I remember when I was going through Whythenshaw a just few miles south and Irie was getting hammered by 105.9. A terrible choice of frequency which completely localises their signal. If they were on 105.7 they'd be fine, but it takes slightly more than half a brain cell of logic to work that one out so they've no hope!

I always assumed they were trying to do just that and localise the signal. Surely they're targetting the local community. If so, then they've done OK with it - they've been on for ages until just now. Fine in central Manchester but any further out than say, Didsbury is, and they're hiding nicely in the sidebands of 105.9 :tup

I don't think they are but you may be right, I mean they used to be Manchester wide when they were on 99.7 until OCR came on there. They then moved to 105.8 which may have sounded clear on their bedroom radio with a broken aerial but no good if they planned to cover the same areas as before.

....You'd think they'd have realised not long afterwards that they need to think again and move again (down to 105.7 or somewhere else) but maybe they were just happy that they were still covering their local areas of which they don't hold back mentioning on air. (Moss, Fallow, Old Traff, Whalley etc)

So you could well be correct.

That's a community station from the Seven Sister's tower blocks in Old Trafford right on the north west edge of Moss Side. They only run about 20-25w but they get out OK due to the location of the transmitter.

Irie are back on this evening. Audio was never the best but especially bad at the moment. This may be due to the poxy signal where I am and the proximity to City Talk on 105.9, but sounds like it's overdeviating. Let's hope they're still testing the thing and their engineer gets it sorted out soon!
