Recommendations for a decent 48v PSU

Post by MiXiN » Mon Jul 27, 2020 12:56 am

I'm about to buy a pallet amp' using a BLF177, but it needs 48V at 5A I've been told.

Can anyone recommend a rugged power supply for it? I'm guessing 48V at 10A would be minimum needed.

I only have linear power supplies here at 13.8v which are no good.

What are the best brands of switch mode power supplies, and are the eBay jobs any good? Are switch modes reliable?

My recommendation is Meanwell, they're well filtered and I've never had any problems with them. Avoid the cheaper Chinese equivalents, you'll end up with spurs and other rubbish around the carrier.

48V at 5A sounds like its a 150W amp, accounting for 65% efficiency or thereabouts. Any 48V Meanwell PSU with some margin above 5A (perhaps 8A) will be fine, you may also need to shield the PSU from the amp, also add ferrite chokes on the DC supply lead to stop RF getting back into the PSU and causing it to shutdown.

Cheers for the reply, Gareth.

Meanwell it is.

Yeah, it's a 150W PCS Amp.

If I were to buy this one and drive the amp a bit lower at say 80 to 120W, do you think this would do the job nicely? I don't like driving amps at full pelt anyway. https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/embedded ... s/6448212/

Had a right nightmare with Aliexpress about a year ago mate, so refuse to use them now.

Nowhere near the buyer protection that eBay offers. Aliexpress disputes tend to go in favour of the sellers, whereas Ebay tend to always favour the buyer.

Received some faulty meter that cost £30, opened a dispute & got about £6 back from the cunts after a load of tooing & throwing with replies, then dispute closed by Aliexpress.

RS are a top company, but they are really expensive - here is a similar supply for £40 less...

I've bought from AliExpress, mostly trouble free. Their stuff is cheaper, and yes you do have a few disputes which don't go your way, you just need to be careful with what you purchase and from who - buying Meanwell power supplies from a seller with good feedback should be fine. At the end of the day, if its something expensive, you receive it, it doesn't work and AliExpress wont play ball - simply go to your bank and file claim with your credit card issuer. But be prepared for AliExpress to terminate your account if you do this.

No. It's just an earlier version. I have both types here. They were bought directly from Meanwell themselves (I buy 60 to 100 of them each time). They're amongst the best of the cheap SMPSUs. When they're supplied in bulk, they arrive wrapped in bubble-wrap in a wooden crate.

There are other brands worth considering - I buy "Advance" brand units for 24V supplies.
