I've got 20 x BB304 in my component draw and all the other components are available online. So if anyone can get some PCB's made up we might have a evening project for any necks who want to make one up

You could always add one of those little Pira PLL boards and 1w stage if you wanted to make a rig out of it, I've got a 1w NRG VFO with Pira PLL on the same board and it works wonders, clean as a whistle...

I made some boards that are this circuit with a cmos pll and a 1 watt smd amp stage.

It's a standard 3mm ferrite bead with 5 turns enameled wire on it.

what gauge of enamelled wire is it?

I am coming round to completing this oscillator which is in my driver board 'design' with the classic 4 chip CMOS pll. Is there anything that is that critical in the build that I should take care of? I've heard the coils need to be close to Identical?

The coils MUST be identical for the circuit to work properly. Stephen and I tried etched coils, but found that the board became microphonic.

What gauge wire do you use?I’m using 18swg and I think it’s too big.I have to file down the ends to get them to fit in the pcb.

I finished building the oscillator part today on my 1 watt driver board and it worked first time! Even tho the coils weren’t really close it still worked and is remarkably stable, even without the pll.I just need to add an amplifier stage and the 4 chip pll and I should have a 10£ driver board !!

I put it on the analyser and I’m getting harmonics at ~ -20db relative to the carrier which is not good at all.This was a bit of a bodge - I had to widen the holes so that the coil wire would fit which meant there wasn’t much copper pad left to solder to.I’ll make sure to get the coils exact as well.

I changed the coil on the output to a bead with five turns.All the half frequency breakthrough is gone....but now there is 2F only slightly down from the carrier grrr.

Albert H posted a 5W exciter schematic a few years back, it’s on the forums under a thread labeled “cheap 1w exciters”. Use the output matching from this schematic, not only does it match from around 12R up to 50R it also acts as a band pass filter from 87.5 to 108 - this should help cut back any 1/2 freq and 1 1/2 freq from getting to the output.
