Alices/Phoenix were the same group. Our Radio on 103.something had several substations including DBC using their tx. The Chris Miles LMR on 94.4 also carried Zodiac. Parkside from Roehampton on 90.2 as was Radio 23 (not sure of freq). Couple of spoof stations as well such as Radio Dog which I think was a dig at John Dawson. London FM on 94 (one of the early stereo ones with very good stereo).

One April the First, there was "Red Flag Radio", which described itself as "London's first Socialist Radio Station, broadcasting from the People's Republic of Islington", on 1404 kHz MW. It was actually very funny, and successfully took the p*** out of Ken Livingstone and the GLC.

There was also "Radio-Blow-the-Gaff", which was another dig at Dawson (and a few others) over one Christmas. There was "Tramshed Radio" that spoofed Thameside, and even "Thargside Radio" featuring the robotic voice of "Brian Tharg".....

It really was worth tuning about in those days!

"Bedside Radio" 92.3 MHz - a late night rock station in South London with spectacular coverage - their site was on Sydenham Hill, with a great view over London. Used to take live phone calls!

"Radio Activity" 93 MHz - often came from the Wandsworth Bridge blocks and usually had good coverage.

"Breakfast Music Radio" 95.5MHz - played pop for two hours each weekday morning as an alternative to all the adverts on Crapital!

"Radio North Kent" 92.8 MHz - Sunday evenings to North Kent and South London. Often broadcast with battery powered gear from tall trees in high areas near Biggin Hill and Chelsfield. Famously drifted downwards and caused interference to......

"Radio Weird" 92.6 MHz - mostly broadcast on the Full Moon! Famously beheaded Justin Simmonds of Radio North Kent on the air after an on-air "Court" hearing:

"Justin Simmons. You stand accused of interfering with a much nicer radio station. How do you plead?"

"Sycophantically, your Honour!"

Pirate Radio was much more fun in those days - much more creative! "Weird" had some great presenters - "Legless Lurch", "Andy B Driver" (drove a bus, of course), "Lug-less Douglas", "Hugo Lee-Jay" and several more. Very silly!

Completely agree pirate radio 30 years ago was 100 times more interesting than now when certain stations now just can't even be bothered to actually programme any shows

I'd love to be involved in a set up that played snipits of the 80's scene over the air...people tuning in would think they've been in a bad dream over the last 20/30 odd years of hearing the same rubbish through there radios.

Funny you should say that. I heard a test transmission in North London recently in the middle of the night that did just that. They had an old "Kenny Myers" tape from RFL from about 1979 or 80. It had a wide selection of - mostly - rock tracks, presented in a relaxed and informative style.... I wonder if Myers is going to come out of retirement and put RFL on again, and that was what the test was for?

I also found some old programme tapes from a couple of stations that I was involved with back then, and they're very much more worth listening to than the frankly boring rubbish that's on today.

Modern technology has made the radio game much easier. One station I put in in Eastern Europe has to run pre-recorded shows and don't want to go near their site, so they have a little computer with the transmitter (that also does the stereo coding and RDS), which plays out the programmes in sequence. The clever thing is that there's no permanent link to the site - the uploads are done in "burst mode", with a one
hour programme uploaded in a few seconds! Their link transmitter is only active - from various places - for a few seconds each day, so the authorities can't find them. Their rig site is also highly secure (actually bricked shut, with much of the gear in concrete), and there's a UPS which keeps it on the air during the fairly frequent power cuts. The authorities leave it alone (mostly) because they don't like the hassle they get if it goes off. That's real Rebel Radio!
