The LWR 92.5 FM thread

Post by FMEnjoyer » Mon Nov 22, 2021 6:09 pm

One that I am unable to add very much to personally sorry.

This was the first pirate I ever heard on some Sony deck thing in the living room with a cassette player in and a tuning meter and the false wooden speakers. So it was the start of being interested in different music and radio. I am interested in all tid bits of info about this legendary black music provider of the late 80's and 90's.

I really don't know much about them at all, not even where they were based what were they like and stories.

Thanks good one that with a more wide overview of stations of the time. The tunes were cool back then... souly, funky, rare grooves and hip hop. I always thought LWR might have been in Crystal palace from pirate fanzines and other bits I used to read back then. I guess it was the golden era. I can remember new stations popping up every weekend, all types of music catered for. In London there must have been 80 stations at a weekend. I don't know how they even fitted in.. some literally next door to each other. LWR was the first one it just sounded different than the commercial stations.

I used to pick up LWR very clearly in Reading in 1985 along with Solar on 102.5 at the time and Horizon on 94.5 and this was before kiss even started as a pirate and LWR was a bit earlier than the late 80s it became a black station in 1984 and was gone before 1990 but made a comeback around 2000 on 89.6 for a few years on and off

I just thought people might have a few stories, locations of studios, technical link system info, TX sites, coverage. Rivalry run ins.. and yes sorry they were much earlier than I stated.

"John Dawson" set up LWR in 1981, playing electro stuff from a studio in his flat in Sydenham (Lawrie Park Avenue), linked on Band III to a disused house up near Crystal Palace Parade. The station broadcast from Friday evenings through to Sunday evenings - "London Weekend Radio".

A year or so later, Zack and his pals got involved, and it turned into a 24/7 station ("London-Wide Radio") from above a butcher's shop at 19A Central Hill Crystal Palace (which is now a barber's shop). They had a number of studio locations in the neighbourhood over the next couple of years.

I think you will find it was new years day 1983 and I think Mark Mason was with them in the pop days and stayed with the Zak version of LWR for about a year

I think you're confusing LWR with SLR (South London Radio) which I think Keith/John Dawson did set up in 1981

Yes they had a sound like no one else then when I started tuning around I could slowly start finding more and more stations sounding a bit the same with music I had never heard much of on the radio. It was a really exciting time and quite a discovery.

Absolutely right there is far to much coverage of 90s and 2000s pirates and not nearly enough of the 80s by 1990 some of them are not much different to what is on nowadays

I said you were right about LWR have you got any more stories from around 1984 till about 1988? I find that so interesting far more than before or after especially Solar being a split from Horizon in 1984 and a year later TKO doing exactly the same thing to Solar when they went for the non existent 1985/6 community licences and TKO didn't want to wait like Solar did

Louie, the guy who ran TKO, always wanted a proper broadcast licence, and closing down the station was part of that. In common with several other stations, they decided to try for the "Community" licences that still haven't ever happened! Successive governments have been scared of liberalising broadcasting, and the democratisation that's come from the Internet has really scared them.

Rumour has it that the new "Internet Dangers" Act is going to try to curtail 'net broadcasting!

I remember Mr sinclar asking me to come onto TKO in early 1987 when the studio was above a restaurant in Crystal Palace I don't remember him talking about a licence but this was 6 months after the broken promise about licences unless you mean he was thinking about applying in 1988 when TKO closed down i wasn't working with them that year I always thought TKO was totally pirate

I remember their "link" system:

The Water Board had dug up most of the roads around that part of Crystal Palace, putting in new drains and replacing some damaged pipework. During the night, Louie and a couple of the lads buried a cable between their studio and their transmitter site, giving them a "link" that was never found!

Brilliant story Albert I didn't know that one and do you know anything about Fame945fm that was on at the end of 1985 which used the horizon frequency like TKO used the Solar frequency but unlike TKO comeing on without Solars approval fame was helped by horizon did you ever help or know the people involved with fame fm?
