Ah.... you mean "Boring Barry" & Co....

They used to use Marconi's number 01 445 2255 as well!

Well, I never found him boring but I guess you must have a reason for saying that! - last time I spoke to him over the phone which was a long time ago I found him most insightful! - As I do you too...

I think that it was Dave Fuller who nicknamed him "Boring Barry", and it sort of stuck!

I found a tape last week from the early 80s of "Radio Red Flag" that was broadcast on a May Day Bank Holiday. It was a very funny spoof - on Medium Wave - "the medium of the proletariat - none of that elitist FM stuff" - as "London's First Socialist Radio Station".

One DJ claimed that "I've just been voted behind the microphone for the next hour" and it was very well put together with some excellent lefty choices of music!

Why don't we have intelligent pirates like that any more?

We had a Soul station and a Pop & Rock station using the same house (on top of a very high hill) to broadcast from up in Yorkshire (in the early 80s). The two transmitters were at either end of the loft, with aerials on each end of the house roof. The studios were in nearby houses, about five doors apart. Both studios fed their rigs by cables buried through the gardens. I don't think that either station was raided there, but the set-up lasted for one Christmas and New Year.

Sam, was 01 300 1234 a phone box? I seem to vaguely remember a couple of good consecutive numbers in phone boxes next to each other in either Hurst Road or Penhill Road.....
